Santa Fe is located 57 km (40 miles) from the City of Santiago, in the northern region of Panama's Province of Veraguas. The region is popular for its mild climate, lush mountain landscapes and the numerous waterfalls, rivers and rapids. Set at over 450 meters above sea level it is no surprise that the area boasts one of the largest populace for species of birds, orchids, and is home to literally dozens of frog and butterfly species; while its dense forests -including Santa Fe National Park- are home to jaguars, deer, monkeys, sloths and anteaters.
This region's rich history dates back to 1557 when the Spanish Captain Francisco Vasquez battled the local Urraca Indian tribe for their deep gold mines, as well as the quest to introduce Catholicism to the indigenous population. The Church of San Francisco de la Montana, located on the road to Santa Fe, is one of the best and oldest examples of baroque art and architecture built in the Americas mountains and its recent altar renovation by the Vatican highlights the interesting mix among Spanish Catholicism and local Indigenous culture.
Contrary to many of Panama's other destinations, Santa Fe's ambitions are respect for the land and Indigenous Peoples who make up this truly unique experience. Tourism, especially adventure and nature, is just one segment of the area's effort to create a sustainable environment for future generations.
